At Quro Medical, we are committed to pioneering digital healthcare solutions that enhance patient care and accessibility. As part of our ongoing mission to revolutionise home-based healthcare, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Thandaza Cyril Nkabinde as our Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
Dr Nkabinde brings a wealth of clinical expertise, academic leadership, and a passion for patient-centred healthcare to his new role. As a Specialist Family Physician and a Fellow of the College of Family Physicians (CMSA), he holds an MBChB and MMed in Family Medicine from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Currently pursuing a PhD in medical education, Dr Nkabinde is deeply invested in shaping the future of healthcare through both practical innovation and academic research.
With extensive experience in public and private healthcare across urban and rural settings, Dr Nkabinde understands the challenges and opportunities within the South African healthcare landscape. As CMO, he will focus on advancing clinical excellence and governance, overseeing our nationwide clinical operations, and playing a key role in strategic plans for our expanding hospital-at-home services.
“My vision is to lead a clinical team that delivers world-class, patient-centred hospital-at- home care with excellence, innovation, and compassion. Grounded in the principles of family medicine, we will continue to embrace a holistic approach, treating patients not just as individuals with medical conditions, but as people within the context of their families, homes, and communities.” – Dr Cyril Nkabinde.
By integrating cutting-edge technology with evidence-based medicine, we ensure that care is not only clinically effective but also deeply personal. Central to our approach is interdisciplinary collaborative practice. He states, “I strongly believe in bringing together doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and caregivers to provide truly integrated care. Through teamwork, innovation, and a shared commitment to excellence, we will optimise health outcomes while ensuring dignity, comfort, and continuity of care for patients where they heal best—their own homes.”
A Leader in Medical Education and Collaboration
Beyond his clinical expertise, Dr Nkabinde is an active academic and educator. As a faculty member at UKZN’s Department of Family Medicine, he has contributed to medical education through research and curriculum development, particularly in rural district hospitals. His work includes publications focused on medical education, such as medical doctors' learning needs and small group learning facilitation, and co-authoring a chapter on experiential learning in a globally recognised WONCA publication (2023).
His contributions extend to internationally funded projects aimed at strengthening interprofessional education and student exchange programmes in collaboration with the global health program at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine.
“Having been involved in medical education and clinical practice over the years, whilst deepening my understanding of self-regulation and self-regulated practice, I have realised that there are inseparable forces that are required to shape a practitioner’s ability to truly understand and serve communities,” states Dr Nkabinde.
“Education provides the foundation of knowledge, but it is through practice and experiential learning—engaging with patients in their own environments—that one develops the empathy, cultural awareness, and clinical insight needed for meaningful care. This critical intersection is where theory meets humanity, where learning becomes a lived experience, and where we cultivate the skills to address not just diseases, but the real needs of the people and communities we serve.”
Committed to Social Justice and Community Empowerment
As the Chairperson of Hope Nation, a Durban-based non-profit organisation, Dr Nkabinde is committed to empowering South African youth through education and healthcare support. Additionally, he serves as a Trustee for Umthombo Youth Development, an initiative that provides underprivileged students with opportunities to pursue health science degrees.
“Growing up in challenging circumstances, I quickly came to understand the profound impact that social determinants of health have on a person’s life trajectory. This awareness ignited my passion for engaging in forums that recognise health equity not merely as an aspiration but as a moral imperative,” states Dr Nkabinde.
By actively shaping the futures of young people, Dr Nkabinde hopes to empower them with the opportunities and support needed to break cycles of disadvantage, ultimately leading to better health outcomes and a more just society.
Leading into the Future
As Quro Medical continues to expand its footprint in technology-enabled home-based care, Dr Nkabinde’s leadership will be instrumental in ensuring that patient-centred healthcare remains at the core of our mission. His experience and clinical expertise, academic rigour, and social commitment align perfectly with our vision of making high-quality healthcare more accessible and affordable for all.
